Olive Eggers – The “Green Eggs & Ham” Chickens
Sometimes jokingly called the “Green Eggs & Ham” chickens, Olive Eggers are famous for producing some of the most striking eggs you’ll ever see in a backyard flock. Instead of the usual brown or white, these hens lay beautiful shades of olive, moss green, and deep army-green eggs.
Olive Eggers aren’t a standardized breed. They are created by crossing a dark egg layer with a blue egg layer. The dark pigment from breeds like Marans mixes with the blue egg gene from birds like Easter Eggers, creating those incredible olive-colored eggs.
At Blue Ribbon Creek, our Olive Eggers come from pairing our big Black Copper Marans rooster (“Big Daddy”) with our colorful Easter Egger hens. This cross produces chicks that grow into hens capable of laying gorgeous olive-toned eggs.
Because Olive Eggers are a genetic cross rather than a fixed breed, the birds themselves can look very different from one another. Feather colors, patterns, comb types, and even body shape can vary widely. The image shown here is just one possible appearance. An Olive Egger might be black, brown, red, barred, speckled, or even carry hints of blue or gray.
What stays consistent is the magic in the egg basket.
Each hen lays her own shade of green, which means every carton can look a little different. Some eggs lean toward mossy olive, others toward deep military green, and sometimes you’ll see lighter sage tones mixed in. It’s one of the reasons Olive Eggers have become such a favorite among backyard chicken keepers.
Every chick is unique, every hen grows into her own look, and no two egg baskets are ever quite the same.
That’s part of the fun of Olive Eggers.
From Our Flock to Yours
At Blue Ribbon Creek, our Olive Egger chicks are hatched from our own carefully selected flock, including our Black Copper Marans rooster and colorful Easter Egger hens. Because of the mixed genetics, every hatch produces birds with their own personalities and appearances, but all with the potential to add those beautiful green shades to your egg basket.
From time to time we have Olive Egger chicks or hatching eggs available, depending on the season and how the girls are laying. If you’re hoping to add some colorful eggs to your own coop, feel free to reach out and see what’s currently hatching here at the creek.
And once you start collecting baskets filled with shades of olive, chocolate, blue, and brown, it’s hard to go back to plain grocery store eggs again.
Why Olive Egger Eggs Are Green
Olive eggs are created when the dark brown pigment from Marans eggs overlays the blue egg gene from Easter Eggers or Ameraucanas. The combination produces shades ranging from sage and moss green to deep olive and army green.
The exact shade depends on genetics, which is why every Olive Egger hen lays a slightly different color.
